What an orthodontist does
Orthodontics is about the bite, jaws, growth, and long-term stability.
An orthodontist is a dental specialist trained to diagnose how teeth, jaws, and facial growth work together. Straight teeth matter, but the bigger goal is a stable bite that supports chewing, hygiene, facial balance, and healthy development.
At Oxnard Orthodontix, the consultation helps families understand the problem, compare realistic options, and decide whether to start treatment now or keep watching growth over time.
A complete orthodontic evaluation can review:
- Crowding and spacing
- Overbite and underbite
- Crossbite and open bite
- Jaw growth patterns
- Impacted or delayed teeth
- Airway-related clues
- Facial balance
- Retainer needs

Dr. Michael Nedjat-Haiem is an orthodontic and craniofacial orthopaedics specialist who brings academic leadership, research, and a warm patient-centered approach to growing smiles. A Los Angeles native, he graduated summa cum laude from UCLA, earned his dental degree at the UCLA School of Dentistry, and continued specialty training in Orthodontics and Craniofacial Orthopaedics at the University of Connecticut. Conservative treatment philosophy
Complex orthodontic cases deserve careful planning before extractions.
Some patients truly need advanced treatment. But before removing healthy teeth or committing to aggressive expansion, Dr. Haiem looks closely at the whole case and explains whether a more conservative plan is realistic.
How conservative planning helps
- Review crowding, bite function, facial balance, growth, airway-related clues, and long-term stability.
- Look carefully before recommending extractions or expanders, especially when a conservative path may be realistic.
- Explain what happens if you treat now, monitor growth, or wait for more dental development.
- Plan braces or clear aligners around the person, not just the position of the front teeth.
Technology-guided orthodontics
Advanced records help the orthodontist see the full picture.
Technology does not replace clinical judgment. It gives the orthodontist better information when planning complex tooth movement, jaw relationships, growth patterns, and treatment timing.
CBCT Imaging
Three-dimensional imaging can help evaluate teeth, roots, airway clues, jaw structure, and complex growth patterns when a case needs more detail.
Cephalometric Analysis
Cephalometric records help measure jaw relationships, facial balance, bite development, and growth direction before committing to a treatment plan.
Digital Orthodontic Planning
Digital records, photos, scans, and measurements help families compare braces, aligners, monitoring, and conservative alternatives clearly.
